Soo a few weeks ago I watched an episode of Greys Anatomy titled "Don't Decieve Me (Please Don't Go)". You can watch it on http://www.ctv.ca/. This episode was all about bringing Twitter into hospitals. At the beginning of the show there was a surgery being performed with many attendees watching. However, the attendees were not just viewing the procedure they were following another procedure on Twitter. At first, it was kinda shocking to me that this would even be allowd! I mean, who would feel safe being operated on if this was going on around you!? Further on in the episode after all the discression of the staff tweeting, a almost miracle like event happens. While another procedure is taking place a complication arises. However, thankfully to other hospitals who were using Twitter a life was saved because the information needed to finish the surgery had been tweeted on Twitter.

This goes to show that social media can benefit us in so many ways. In this case, having the attendees in the hospital "tweeting", saved a life. I couldn't believe this was taking place during surgeries in the episode, but once information was provided to back it up my mind easily changed. I don't know if this is starting to happen in real life hospitals, (somehow I doubt it) but I definately wouldn't be surprised if it did soon!

What will they come up with next!?!?

  1. That is really cool that Twitter could save a life but its unrealistic like you said that a hospital would be allowed to use their cellphone during an operation and access the internet and tweet. But maybe this could be an idea for something similar to twitter that only all hospitals in a related region could be connected to and they could send updates to each other using not a cellphone but some other device that every staff member could access. Its a good idea to keep in touch with other hospitals, it might help the health care system.

  2. That's pretty funny! I would hope that my doctor doesn't tweet when I'm under the knife, though. Even if it could safe a life, I bet there's a 1:100 ratio of saving a life to messing up the operation.

  3. I love Grey's Anatomy and for sure, I watched this episode few weeks ago =)
I don't think there is an hospital which use Twitter to make students who study medicine follow the procedure.
In the episode, you can see that thank to Twitter they have found a way to save a life but we have to keep in mind that it's just a series and in the real life, it's more complicated. But why not :)

  4. I saw this episode aswell. I think its an interesting idea, but sort of unrealistic during a risky surgury even though the surgeon was obviously not the one on twitter. Its interesting in the sense that valuable information is being shared through a specified feed reletive to educated doctors.

  5. As interesting as this sounds, I for one would not want anyone with a mobile phone while im having a surgery, let alone TWEETING! Its good how tweeting saved a life but realistically I doubt it would be the same story in any hospital. They are already developing technology which allows doctors and surgoens to watch a seminar and follow during a live surgery. But I think this would be as far as it goes, Twitter should be used as a social thing, not a learning tool during a life or death situation.

  6. I think this example is very inspiring. Who's to say that Twitter or Facebook can only be used for socializing purposes? Take us as an example, we've been utitlizing the FB Groups to organizing project meetings and discussions. So to me, if the medical facility decides to use Twitter as a form of communications during a pre-, LIVE or post operation discussion, then use it to the full potential! Obviously there are other alternatives such as Skype which will provide a real-time 2-way interaction. In my opinion, if it is beneficial and there are policies and discretion held, I don't see why not!
